Interventional radiology is a wide-ranging specialty which offers a variety of minimally invasive procedures for different organ systems. Advanced imaging modalities including CT, ultrasound, and angiography are used to place needles and catheters into precise locations in the body. After placement, a variety of therapies are performed. Some procedures use balloons and stents to increase blood flow to areas affected by atherosclerosis (often in the legs). Other procedures decrease blood flow to abnormal areas such as aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, varicose veins, and tumors. Catheters are used to deliver therapies directly into arteries feeding tumors. Nonsurgical treatment of some tumors is performed by placing special needles placed precisely into tumors and deliver high levels of heat or cold. Some types of back pain can be managed by precisely placing needles into the spine and injecting cement to stabilized fractures or steroids to reduce inflammation around the nerves. These procedures offer an alternative to open surgery and minimize recovery time. Pueblo Medical Imaging has specialists dedicated to the following Interventional Radiology specialties: Back Pain, Interventional Oncology, Neurointerventional, Pediatric, Peri-Vascular and Venous Disease, Venous Access and Women’s Health.
